The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has dismantled a criminal syndicate operating along the Ebonyi-Benue border, recovering an AK-47 rifle, ammunition and other dangerous weapons.

Briefing journalists at the command headquarters in Abakaliki on Thursday, Ebonyi State Commandant, Francis Nnadi, praised the officers for their conduct during the operation. He said the security team raided several locations, but some suspects and their collaborators escaped.

The operation targeted hideouts used by suspected criminals and cult groups operating between Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and neighbouring Benue State. It followed a week-long intelligence-gathering exercise and involved operatives from the NSCDC Intelligence and Investigation Department and the State Commandant’s Special Squad.

Items recovered during the operation included an AK-47 rifle, a double-loaded magazine, four rounds of live ammunition, a locally made pistol and a pump-action gun. The operatives also recovered five tactical knives and assorted charms.

Nnadi warned criminal groups operating in the state to leave before the 2027 general elections. He said the NSCDC was working with other security agencies to tackle crime across Ebonyi.

“I want to warn criminal elements ahead of the general elections to flee Ebonyi State. The Command, in conjunction with other sister security agencies, is fully prepared to rid the state of all forms of crime and criminality,” he said.

The commandant also assured residents of border communities and other parts of the state of adequate security before, during and after the elections.

“I want to assure residents of the border communities and the entire state of adequate security before, during, and after the elections,” he added.

He urged residents to support security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could help maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, the NSCDC said it had launched a manhunt to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
