Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has credited President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies with boosting revenue to the state and local governments, saying increased allocations have enabled his administration to execute projects and pay contractors as and when due.

Oborevwori spoke during the  Delta State All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign flag-off in Oleh, where he praised Tinubu’s leadership and described him as “a bold and courageous leader, determined to leave a lasting legacy of economic prosperity and sustainable development.”

The governor said Delta was the first state to join the APC last year, adding that the decision followed consultations with stakeholders and prayers from farmers.

“We prayed about it and God gave us the vision to say, go and work with this man,” he said. “We invited stakeholders, we discussed with stakeholders and they all agreed and we all moved,” Oborevwori said.

Oborevwori said the increased revenue from the oil and non-oil sectors had boosted monthly allocations to state and local governments.

“Today, the increased revenue from oil and non-oil sector boosted monthly allocation to state and local governments. We are getting more money,” he said.

He attributed his administration’s ability to pay contractors and award projects to the increased revenue, asking, “Where is the money coming from?”

The governor also praised Tinubu for introducing the new minimum wage, saying Delta had complied with the policy.

He further commended the president for championing financial autonomy for local government councils, which he said had strengthened grassroots development.

“Today, as we speak, local government can execute projects,” Oborevwori said, adding that councillors across the state had been carrying out empowerment programmes.

On education, the governor said 17,500 Delta students had benefited from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), urging more students to apply.

“17,500 is not enough. The more you apply, the more you get,” he said.

Oborevwori said the state had about 104,000 students across its four universities and other institutions who could benefit from the programme.

He also praised Tinubu’s electricity reforms, noting that the new Electricity Act had ended the Nigerianl government’s monopoly in the sector and opened it to private participation.

The governor said Delta had also introduced its own electricity law and would soon constitute the relevant body to implement it.

Oborevwori further cited the Nigerian government’s reported increase in foreign reserves to 58.81 billion from 35.09 billion, describing it as the strongest external liquidity position since 2008.
