Tesla will wind down production of its Cybertruck electric pickup at its Texas factory around mid-2027, Chief Executive Elon Musk said on Friday, marking a retreat from a model that has struggled to meet sales expectations.

Musk said in a post on X that the move would allow the company to increase production of its Cybercab robotaxi, a key part of his ambition to turn Tesla into an autonomous-vehicle and robotics company.

The announcement comes after years of weak Cybertruck sales, far below Musk’s initial forecast of 250,000 units annually.

Tesla sold 20,237 Cybertrucks in the United States last year, down 48% from 38,965 in 2024, according to automotive data platform Kelley Blue Book.

The company began delivering the angular electric pickup in late 2023, after unveiling it in 2019. Musk had promoted it as a futuristic rival to conventional pickups from General Motors and Ford.

In an X post responding to a user, Musk described the Cybertruck as the “best vehicle Tesla has ever made” and its planned wind-down as the “end of an era”.

It remains unclear whether Tesla will transfer production to another facility or discontinue the model entirely. Its Austin factory is the only known Tesla site equipped to manufacture the Cybertruck’s specialised components.

Former Aston Martin chief executive Andy Palmer said the decision made commercial sense given the model’s failure to meet its targets.

“It doesn’t make sense to keep it going when it’s not meeting its targets,” Palmer said.

The Cybertruck has faced criticism over its design and safety, and Tesla has issued 11 recalls since the vehicle went on sale, according to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some required physical repairs, while others were addressed through software updates.

Its stainless-steel body and sharp edges have also limited its prospects in Europe, where pedestrian-impact rules pose regulatory barriers.
