Zambia Suffers Nationwide Power Outage

On Sunday, Zambia was hit by an electricity outage that affected almost every state in the country. This was a result of irregular rainfall which resulted in power cuts.

The state-owned power company Zesco suspects a “system failure” and is now working to ensure “all systems are restored as quickly as possible”.

Most of the country region including the country capital, Lusaka, and the Copperbelt region which houses the majority of Zambia’s copper mines, was also without electricity on Sunday.  This resulted in the mines adopting the emergency diesel power.

Zesco later said it had begun a systematic restoration of power and was investigating the cause of the loss of electricity.

Zambia mostly gets its power from hydroelectric generation and has in the past experienced power cuts due to irregular rainfall
