Moroccan Navy Foils Smuggling of Two Tonnes of Cannabis

The Moroccan navy has intercepted 2 tonnes of cannabis off the coast of the Mediterranean city of Nador.

A navy unit on patrol in the Mediterranean chased down a speedboat, adding that the culprits on board escaped after throwing the drug shipment into the sea.

In June, Moroccan navy coast guard foiled a similar attempt to smuggle five tonnes of the same substance off the Mediterranean coast of Nador.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime says in spite of efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation in the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world’s largest producers of the narcotic plant.
