13 killed as Gold Mine Collapses in Sudan (News Central TV)

Reports indicate that not less than 13 gold miners have died in Sudan’s South Kordofan State after a tunnel collapsed.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night after the discovery of large amounts of gold in one of the shafts. The discovery of the gold deposits attracted a large number of small-scale miners, which caused the accident.

Other miners also sustained severe injuries during the incident but the specific number of victims has not been ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

About 80% of Sudan’s lucrative gold mining is extracted using dangerous makeshift methods.

An official with the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company told newsmen; “The mine was not up to standards and miners and residents of the area have refused government oversight.”

Recall that on March 3, News Central reported that 18 persons were killed when a gold mine collapsed in Guinea.
