Journalists, media leaders and political figures gathered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Thursday, December 4, 2025, for the continent’s inaugural ceremony honouring excellence in African storytelling at the 2025 African Media Awards.

Speaking at the just-concluded event, George Ndjaka, CEO of the African Union of Broadcasting, praised the overwhelming response and the quality of submissions received for the first-of-its-kind continental awards.

Ndjaka announced that they had received 800 products from 40 African countries, describing the turnout as clear evidence of a growing surge of creativity across the region. He added that when one considers the quality of the submissions, it is gratifying to see how much progress has been made.

Reflecting on the depth and diversity of the entries, he said: “The quality of this product is telling the history of Africa, the variety of Africa.”
He encouraged all contributors — winners and non-winners alike — noting: “Even for those who did not win, I believe that they are already… ready to write the story of Africa, to tell the story of Africa.”

Ndjaka also addressed the high level of competition, emphasising how difficult it was for judges to choose between strong contenders. “We had a lot of problems to divide some candidates because the quality of the productions were high. They were good, they were pertinent, and so on,” he said.

He concluded his remarks by expressing appreciation for the event’s supporters and participants, offering special thanks to media partner RT:
“I would like at the end of this process to thank RT for all what they did, to thank the management of RT, and to thank each and every one of you who took time to come and reach here at the heart of this continent, Ethiopia.”

Closing on a forward-looking note, Ndjaka encouraged continued unity around African media excellence:
“Let us meet again next year in another country.”

The 2025 Africa Media Awards mark a significant milestone for the continent, spotlighting the power of African voices and the growing influence of African storytelling on the global stage.
