Algeria Beat Morocco to Claim WAFCON Bronze

Morocco suffered another penalty shootout loss at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday, falling 3-2 to Algeria after a 1-1 draw in the third-place play-off.

The tournament hosts converted their first two penalty kicks in Rabat before missing three consecutive shots.

Ines Belloumou scored the decisive fourth penalty for Algeria to secure the bronze medal.

Regular time ended in a tie after Kautar Azraf gave Morocco the lead in the 37th minute and Lina Boussaha equalised for Algeria in the 83rd minute.

The defeat completes a disappointing tournament run for Morocco, who previously fell to Cameroon in Wednesday’s semi-final shootout.

Both Morocco and Algeria have nevertheless secured qualification for next year’s 32-nation Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
