Algeria has taken custody of a German citizen who was kidnapped about two weeks ago by an armed criminal group across the border in Niger.

The German, identified as Ulumaskan Sinan, was handed over to Algerian army security forces on Friday, according to a statement from the Defence Ministry on Saturday.

Sinan was flown from In Guezzam, in southern Algeria, to the Boufarik military base near the capital, Algiers.

The ministry said Sinan was in “good health” and would later be handed over to German authorities.

It added that the German citizen had provided information about “the circumstances of his kidnapping and his detention by his captors for about two weeks.”

The ministry did not provide further details about the circumstances of his release or identify the armed group involved.

Niger has been under military rule since a July 2023 coup and has faced growing insecurity in recent years.

The country has been affected by attacks from terrorist groups linked to Al-Qaeda, particularly in areas near its borders with neighbouring countries.
