Atletico Madrid have progressed to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after edging FC Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate, absorbing a 2-1 second-leg defeat in a fiercely contested encounter at the Metropolitano.

Barcelona began with urgency, asserting control early through Lamine Yamal, whose sharp finish inside four minutes unsettled the hosts. The visitors extended their advantage midway through the first half when Ferran Torres capitalised on a well-worked move, bringing the aggregate score level and placing Atletico under sustained pressure.

Despite that early setback, Atletico demonstrated tactical discipline and composure. Ademola Lookman delivered the pivotal moment, converting from close range after Marcos Llorente broke behind Barcelona’s defensive line. The goal restored Atletico’s aggregate lead and ultimately proved decisive in a tie defined by fine margins.

The second half saw Barcelona push for a third goal to force extra time, with Torres briefly appearing to have delivered before his effort was ruled out for offside.

The turning point arrived late when Eric Garcia was shown a red card for denying Alexander Sorloth a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Reduced to ten men, Barcelona’s attacking momentum stalled, limiting their ability to mount a decisive final push.

Diego Simeone’s side now advance to face either Arsenal or Sporting CP in the semi-finals, keeping alive their pursuit of a first Champions League title. Barcelona, however, must extend their wait for European success beyond a decade.
