Alpecin rider Kaden Groves secured victory in Stage 20 of the Tour de France on Saturday, finishing significantly ahead of the main contenders after a long-range escape.
Overall race leader Tadej Pogacar (Team UAE) maintained his comfortable lead over Jonas Vingegaard, setting him up for an anticipated win in Sunday’s final stage in Paris.
Pogacar holds a 4-minute, 24-second advantage heading into the 132 km final ride from Mantes-la-Ville to the Champs-Élysées.
The route includes three challenging ascents of the cobbled streets of Montmartre. The champion-in-waiting narrowly avoided a fall just 500 metres from the finish line on Saturday, as heavy rain made the roads treacherous on the approach to Pontarlier.
This marks Alpecin’s third stage win of this year’s Tour, following earlier victories by Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel.
“They gave me a free role in the final days,” Groves stated, noting that both Philipsen and Van der Poel had withdrawn from the race. “I’m going to enjoy this one and celebrate with my team and enjoy the Champs tomorrow.”
The stage, which crossed the rolling hills at the foot of the Jura mountains, saw only 158 riders complete the course.
Many appeared exhausted after the fast-paced racing in the Alps.
Along the Swiss border, the majority of the peloton seemed content to allow the escape group to build a seven-minute lead after an arduous race that began on July 5.
