Romuald Wadagni is set to become Benin’s next president after his main opponent, Paul Hounkpe, conceded defeat on Monday while ballots were still being tallied.

Hounkpe extended “republican congratulations” to the 49-year-old Finance Minister, who ran with the endorsement of outgoing President Patrice Talon.

Political parties within Benin’s ruling coalition have publicly commended Hounkpè following the country’s election held on Sunday, April 12, 2026.

Speaking on behalf of the Republican Bloc, the Progressive Union for Renewal, and MOELE-Benin, Joseph Djogbénou, in a statement, described Hounkpè as a figure who demonstrated notable courage during the electoral process.

According to the statement, the coalition expressed appreciation for what it described as Hounkpè’s role in national political development and his contribution to democratic engagement in the country. Djogbénou further stated that the message reflected a broader commitment to political respect and to the recognition of all participants in the election, regardless of the outcome.

The coalition also thanked voters, party supporters, and stakeholders who contributed to the conduct of what it described as a successfully organised electoral process.

In a separate statement, Hounkpè acknowledged emerging results indicating a lead for the Wadagni-Talata ticket, describing the development as a reflection of the electorate’s will.

He said, “At the end of a decisive electoral day for the future of our Nation, and in light of the major trends emerging from the progressive tallying of results, it appears that an advantage is taking shape in favor of the Wadagni-Talata duo.”

Hounkpè added that as a statesman committed to republican principles, he recognised the unfolding outcome, noting that he respected “popular suffrage and the stability of our country.”

He also thanked his supporters, saying, “With deep emotion, I wish to extend my most sincere thanks to each and every one of our militants, sympathizers, and supporters.”

Describing his campaign as one driven by a national vision, he said, “This project, which we carried with conviction, remains, I am convinced, one of the most solid, coherent, and ambitious for building a fairer, more inclusive, and more prosperous Benin.”

He concluded by stressing unity beyond electoral competition, stating that “for beyond electoral competition, one single imperative unites us: to serve Benin by working tirelessly for the well-being of our citizens,” and added, “May God bless Benin.”
