Germany has urged the international community to respond firmly following a recent surge in Russian drone attacks on Ukraine that resulted in the deaths of 12 people.

Speaking to the ARD broadcaster on Sunday, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasised that Kyiv’s allies “must react with determination” to Moscow’s escalating aggression.

“We cannot accept such actions,” Wadephul said, condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s disregard for human rights. He also referenced former US President Donald Trump’s efforts to bring Putin to the negotiating table, calling Russia’s actions a blatant insult.

The German official stated that recent events in Ukraine clearly demonstrate that “Putin has no interest in peace; his aim is to prolong the conflict, and we must not let him succeed.”

In response, Germany supports implementing further sanctions at the European Union level. The EU recently introduced its 17th sanctions package, targeting around 200 tankers believed to be part of a “shadow fleet” helping Russia evade oil export restrictions.

Wadephul warned that new sanctions would inflict “serious consequences” on the Russian economy, particularly the energy sector, but also other areas, making it financially difficult for Russia to sustain its war effort.

Despite the tough stance, Germany maintains that “our hand remains outstretched,” emphasising Ukraine’s readiness to negotiate. Wadephul urged Putin to take up the offer and come to the negotiating table.
