At least seven health workers died Friday when strong winds capsized their boat on Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania, the office of President Samia Suluhu Hassan said.
The team was travelling to the village of Kagunga, near the Tanzania–Burundi border, to provide medical care when the vessel sank, according to a presidential statement.
Fourteen people were rescued and are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, while rescue teams continue searching for two others still missing.
The area is home to thousands of Burundian refugees, many of whom have recently returned to their home country after years in Tanzanian camps.

Health workers and humanitarian organisations have been providing services to the displaced populations.
In a separate accident on Lake Tanganyika, a fisherman was killed, and two others were injured when their canoe was struck by lightning.
President Hassan offered her “heartfelt condolences” to the families affected.
East Africa has faced severe storms in recent days, with floods and landslides killing at least 80 people in southern Ethiopia and more than 60 in Kenya.
