Yasmine Bassole, the daughter of exiled Burkina Faso General Djibril Bassole, has been freed by masked men after being held captive for over a year.

She was abducted in September 2024 in the capital, along with her brother and a cousin.

Her family confirmed her release on Monday night, noting that she is safe but requires immediate medical attention.

The kidnapping followed public accusations by her father—a former foreign minister under ex-President Blaise Compaoré, who has lived in exile since 2020—that the current ruling military junta was failing in its fight against terrorist insurgents.

This public criticism reportedly angered the government led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, who came to power in a 2022 coup.

The junta has been repeatedly criticised for using repressive tactics, including forced conscription, to target and silence perceived political opponents.

While Yasmine and her cousin were released, General Bassole’s son, Aziz, remains missing.
