Carrick Refuses to Rule Out Rashford’s Return

Uncertainty continues to surround Marcus Rashford’s future, with Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick confirming that no decision has yet been made on the forward’s status beyond this season.

Rashford, 28, is currently on a season-long loan at FC Barcelona after slipping down the pecking order at Old Trafford. The Spanish club holds an option to make the move permanent for €30 million (£26.1 million), with a deadline set for June 15.

However, United’s hierarchy are reportedly unwilling to renegotiate the agreed terms, placing the onus squarely on Barcelona to activate the clause as it stands.

Despite the uncertainty, Rashford has not ruled out a return to his boyhood club. The England international still has two years remaining on his current contract, which includes a potential 25% salary increase should United secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

His situation is further complicated by financial considerations at the club, particularly under minority owner Jim Ratcliffe, who is keen to reduce the wage bill. With Casemiro expected to depart this summer, Rashford would become the club’s highest earner.

“There’s decisions to be made on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation. But at this point in time, nothing’s been decided,” Carrick said, adding that clarity would come in due course, but emphasised that no conclusions have been reached yet.

Former manager Ruben Amorim had previously suggested Rashford was seeking a new challenge, which led to his temporary move away from Manchester in 2025. Carrick, however, brings a different perspective, having shared a dressing room with Rashford during his playing career and later working with him in a coaching capacity.

For now, Carrick remains focused on immediate priorities on the pitch. United face Chelsea in the Premier League, with a win potentially opening up a 10-point gap over their rivals.

However, defensive absences, including Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez, have complicated preparations, while doubts remain over Leny Yoro’s availability.
