China inaugurated the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge on Sunday, officially opening the world’s highest bridge to traffic.

The bridge, which took three years to build in the mountainous southern province of Guizhou, soars 625 metres (2,051 feet) above a gorge, breaking the record previously held by the province’s own Beipanjiang Bridge.

The colossal structure dramatically reduces travel time between the canyon’s two sides from two hours to just two minutes, according to the provincial transport department.

Officials celebrated the bridge’s opening, noting it will significantly improve regional transportation and boost economic development.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge also boasts the title of the “world’s largest-span bridge built in a mountainous area,” with a main span measuring 1,420 metres.

China’s Guizhou province is a hub for such engineering feats, now hosting the world’s two highest bridges and nearly half of the world’s 100 highest bridges.
