Brazil’s Supreme Court sentenced Eduardo Bolsonaro in absentia to four years and two months in prison on Tuesday after he lobbied the United States to sanction his home country.

The court convicted the 41-year-old son of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro for threatening judicial authorities during his father’s coup trial.

Prosecutors proved that Eduardo promised to secure U.S. sanctions against Brazil if the court ruled against his father, who is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for plotting a 2022 coup.

The ruling also bars Eduardo, who currently resides in the United States, from holding public office for eight years.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes stated that a Brazilian federal deputy should never lobby foreign powers against their own nation.

Eduardo released a statement criticising the verdict, claiming the court designed the trial solely to disqualify him from running as a substitute Senate candidate in the upcoming October elections.

Eduardo’s lobbying efforts initially succeeded last year when U.S. President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on Brazil to punish the country for what he termed a “witch hunt” against Jair Bolsonaro.

However, Washington lifted those duties, along with sanctions against Judge Moraes, following an official meeting between Trump and leftist Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Relations between the two nations remain tense as Trump recently met with presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro—Eduardo’s brother—who is currently deadlocked in election polls against President Lula.
