Healthcare workers ignored clear warning signs that led to Diego Maradona’s 2020 death during home hospitalisation, a forensic physician testified Tuesday at the trial of seven medical professionals in San Isidro, Argentina.
Forensic doctor Carlos Cassinelli told the court that Maradona suffered from progressive deterioration, exhibiting severe swelling, shortness of breath, an abnormally fast heart rate, and signs of hypertension.
He stated that nobody investigated these life-threatening symptoms, leaving the Argentine football legend to endure 12 hours of agony before dying from heart failure and acute pulmonary oedema.
Cassinelli, who served on a medical board reviewing Maradona’s health records, criticised the decision to treat the World Cup winner at home and noted that the attending doctors failed to adjust their approach as his condition worsened.
The seven defendants face potential negligence charges for their role in his demise, though they deny responsibility and claim the former superstar died of natural causes.
The trial, which began in mid-April, could extend past August.
