The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has spread to an eighth province, North Ubangi, worsening the nation’s worst recorded epidemic.
The National Institute for Biomedical Research confirmed two cases, including one death, in the region bordering the Central African Republic.
The public health institute’s announcement validated earlier Reuters reporting after health officials privately cited the initial infections.
Health authorities face mounting challenges as the virus expands beyond its main hub in eastern Congo, where Ituri province recorded 44 of 67 new infections reported in a single 24-hour period.

Recent official figures push the cumulative national totals to 9,415 confirmed cases and 4,536 deaths.
Cross-border transmission continues to escalate as well, with Uganda recording cases and Kenya confirming seven infections this month.
