On Monday, the government of Eswatini announced that 10 more third-country nationals deported from the United States have been jailed in the southern African kingdom.

This is part of a controversial US scheme to expel undocumented migrants to nations other than their country of origin.

Eswatini joins Ghana, Rwanda, and South Sudan in accepting these deportees, a practice that has drawn criticism from human rights organisations.

The 10 individuals have been “securely accommodated in one of the country’s correctional facilities” while the government prepares for their “orderly repatriation.”

This follows a July incident where Eswatini accepted five other nationals, previously convicted in the US for serious crimes, including murder and child rape.

Human Rights Watch claims the deal with Washington involves $5.1 million in financial assistance for Eswatini’s border management capacity in exchange for accepting up to 160 deportees.

Lawyers and civil society groups in Eswatini, a country led by King Mswati III and accused of human rights violations, are now challenging the legality of these detentions in court.

Critics warn that these deportations risk violating international law by sending individuals to countries where they may face abuses.
