European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has condemned drone attacks on merchant ships near Bulgaria’s coast, describing them as a new escalation of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The attacks occurred on Tuesday and hit two vessels, including a Ukrainian-owned cargo ship, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said. The incident marks the second such attack in a week.

However, Radev said authorities had no solid evidence confirming who was behind the strikes. He said he would summon Russia’s ambassador, arguing that Moscow stood to gain from the attacks. Von der Leyen also warned that the strikes threatened crews’ safety and security in the Black Sea.

“The Black Sea has become another front of escalation of the Russian war in Ukraine. This is unacceptable,” she wrote on social media.

She added that the attacks had put crew members’ lives in serious danger and thanked Bulgarian rescuers for their swift response.

“We stand with Bulgaria and thank its rescuers for their swift response. Those responsible should be held accountable,” she said.

The latest incident adds to security concerns in the Black Sea, where Russia’s war in Ukraine has repeatedly threatened commercial shipping.
