Drone attacks on a university dormitory and a shelter for displaced families killed at least 10 people this week in Sudan’s central city of El-Obeid, according to a rights group and medical sources.

On Wednesday, a strike hit a University of Kordofan dormitory housing students and civilians, killing five people and wounding 47 others.

The following day, a second drone struck a shelter holding families displaced by regional violence, killing five more and injuring 13.

A local government official blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for the second attack, though the group has not issued an immediate response.

The strikes coincide with escalating combat across North Kordofan as Sudan’s army and the RSF fight for control of strategic transport hubs linking central and western Sudan.

Both factions have ramped up their use of unmanned aerial vehicles, with United Nations data showing drone strikes killed more than 1,100 people during the first five months of the year alone.

The UN has repeatedly issued warnings regarding the worsening violence in El-Obeid, pointing to severe risks of atrocities and ongoing mass displacement.

The conflict between the military and the RSF has now spanned more than three years, killing an estimated 200,000 people and displacing over 13 million nationwide.

Following the fall of El-Fasher last year, more than 300,000 people fled into the Kordofan region, compounding what aid agencies classify as the world’s largest displacement and hunger crises.
