European Council President Antonio Costa informed Icelandic Prime Minister Kristín Fróðadóttir on Sunday that the European Union fully respects the democratic decision of Icelandic voters to forgo resuming membership negotiations.

Despite the halted accession process, the European Council emphasised that Iceland remains one of the bloc’s closest and most trusted allies.
