Several powerful explosions rocked Kyiv on Saturday as authorities warned that the Ukrainian capital was under threat of missile attack.

“Explosions in the capital. Air defence forces are operating. Stay in shelters!” Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said on Telegram.

Ukraine’s air force issued a nationwide air alert early Saturday, warning that drones and missiles were moving across several regions, including the capital, Kyiv.

Nearly three hours later, the Kyiv regional military administration said air defence systems had been activated in response to an approaching drone.

AFP journalists in the capital reported hearing multiple explosions, some accompanied by bright flashes that illuminated the horizon.

The development comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to meet US President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday to discuss a proposed plan aimed at ending the war, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives since 2022.

On Friday, Russia accused Zelensky and his European Union allies of seeking to “torpedo” the US-brokered initiative.

Details disclosed by Zelensky this week indicate that the proposal is a 20-point plan that would freeze the conflict along existing front lines, while allowing Ukraine to withdraw troops from parts of the east and establish demilitarised buffer zones.
