A series of explosions hit Kyiv early Tuesday after Ukraine’s air force warned of an incoming Russian ballistic missile attack on the capital.
AFP journalists reported hearing about a dozen loud blasts shortly after the warning, while correspondents in Kyiv saw flashes in the sky.
The Ukrainian air force had earlier warned residents that the threat from ballistic weapons and other attacks remained active in Kyiv and the surrounding region, urging people to remain in shelters.
“Several targets heading towards the capital,” the Ukrainian air force said on Telegram.
The latest strikes come as Russia intensifies its aerial campaign against the Ukrainian capital, with repeated air-raid alerts disrupting businesses and prompting tighter security measures ahead of the new school year.
Ukrainian children are returning to school on Tuesday after their summer break. The Kyiv regional military administration has directed that large gatherings should not be held in areas considered high-risk.
Kyiv and neighbouring areas have faced sustained Russian drone attacks in recent weeks, with jet-powered drones adding to the threat and triggering up to a dozen air-raid alerts in a single day.
A weekend attack on an ammunition depot killed 38 people in the capital’s suburbs, according to local authorities.
Both Russia and Ukraine have stepped up long-range attacks in recent months, targeting infrastructure including warehouses, businesses, oil facilities and ports, as well as ships.
The intensified strikes have contributed to rising civilian casualties, while Ukraine continues to face shortages of interceptor missiles, particularly US-made Patriot systems designed to counter ballistic threats.
