The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress the winner of the Abuja Municipal Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory.
Announcing the results at the AMAC collation centre, the collation officer, Andrew Abue, confirmed that the incumbent chairman polled 40,295 votes out of 62,861 valid votes cast to retain his seat. The African Democratic Congress finished second with 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party trailed with 3,398 votes.
Abue disclosed that 2,336 votes were rejected, bringing the total votes cast to 65,197. A total of 65,676 voters were accredited from a register of 837,338 in the council.
“Having satisfied the requirements of the law, Christopher Maikalangu of the APC is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Abue stated at the formal declaration.

Other parties recorded significantly lower tallies. The Social Democratic Party secured 2,185 votes, while the New Nigeria Peoples Party garnered 1,694. The All Progressives Grand Alliance polled 1,111 votes, followed by the Action Democratic Party with 588. The Young Progressives Party received 421 votes, while smaller parties such as Accord, Zenith Labour Party, Allied Peoples Movement, Action Alliance, Peoples Redemption Party, National Rescue Movement, Boot Party and Advanced Peoples Party recorded marginal figures.
Reacting to the outcome, APC collation agent Gambo Babale commended the electoral body for what he described as a transparent and credible process. He noted that party agents monitored proceedings across polling units, ward collation centres and the area council collation centre.
“The fact that the PDP won two councillorship seats in Karu and Karishi wards further shows the level of transparency in this election,” Babale said, adding that the result demonstrates the party’s preparedness for the 2027 general elections.
Similarly, YPP ward collation agent Abdullahi Ibrahim congratulated the winner and expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the exercise. Result sheets were signed by agents of the ADC, APC, APGA, YPP and NNPP present at the collation centre, formally concluding the process.
