Global football regulatory body FIFA defended World Cup referee Raphael Claus on Monday after US President Donald Trump attacked the official’s integrity and branded him “very suspect.”

The international soccer body stated that the Brazilian referee has demonstrated the highest standards of professionalism throughout his career.

Claus sparked the political firestorm last week when he gave American striker Folarin Balogun a controversial red card, prompting Trump to successfully lobby FIFA into lifting the player’s one-match suspension ahead of Monday’s game against Belgium.

Trump directly questioned Claus’s credentials during a White House press briefing, claiming the official made a call that nobody could believe.

The Brazilian Football Confederation quickly condemned the remarks, defending the referee’s unblemished background.

Additionally, FIFA chief refereeing officer Pierluigi Collina strongly backed Claus, emphasising his status as an experienced and highly respected match official who is currently working his second consecutive World Cup.
