Former Manchester United forward Diego Forlán is to become Uruguay’s interim coach after Marcelo Bielsa stepped down following the team’s disappointing World Cup campaign.

Uruguay were eliminated from the tournament after recording two draws, with Bielsa accepting responsibility for the team’s poor performances.

Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) president Ignacio Alonso confirmed that Forlan was excited about the opportunity and that an agreement would be completed soon.

Forlan scored 36 goals in 112 appearances for Uruguay before retiring from international football in 2014.

He will lead the senior team until March 2027 while also managing Uruguay’s under-20 side.

The 47-year-old has two coaching experiences, having previously managed Uruguayan club Peñarol in 2020 and a second-division side the following year.

During his playing career, Forlan spent two seasons at Manchester United F.C. before later featuring for several clubs, including Atlético Madrid, Inter Milan and Villarreal CF.
