French authorities have arrested more than 2,000 people following violent protests that have led to clashes with police, arson and looting in several cities, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has said.

Nunez announced the arrests on Sunday in a post on his official X account. He said investigations were ongoing to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

“For now, more than 2,000 people have been taken into custody, and as of today, investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators of these acts so that they may be held accountable before the courts,” he wrote.

The violence occurred in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux and other cities during mass demonstrations against rising inflation. The protests came following economic pressure linked in part to the US-Iran war. They also followed four weeks of student protests over poor classroom conditions in French high schools. Some of those demonstrations had also turned violent.

Nunez blamed what he described as “several thousand ultra-left individuals” for clashes with police, fires and vandalism at public buildings. He also accused protesters of looting shops on Saturday.

“The material damage is considerable, particularly for several hundred business owners,” he said.

The minister added that more than 600 police officers, firefighters and paramedics had been injured during the protests. However, he warned that the figure could change as more information became available.

Nunez said France “will yield nothing to those who seek to impose disorder and violence” as investigations into the unrest continue.
