A man and a woman suspected of spying for Russia on a drone supplier in Germany have been arrested, officials said on Tuesday, marking the latest alleged espionage case linked to the war in Ukraine.
Germany, a key supporter of Kyiv, has reported a rise in suspected Russian espionage, sabotage and disinformation activities since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. In the latest case, the male suspect, a Ukrainian national identified as Sergey N., was arrested in Alicante, Spain, on 17 February by local police acting under a European arrest warrant, according to German federal prosecutors.
The female suspect, a Romanian national identified as Alla S., was arrested in Germany on Monday.
Prosecutors said that from December 2025, Sergey N., allegedly acting on behalf of a Russian intelligence service, monitored an individual in Germany involved in shipping drones and related components to Ukraine. He is said to have gathered information and recorded videos of the target’s workplace.
After he relocated to Spain, Alla S. allegedly continued the operation by visiting the target’s address and filming it using her mobile phone. Authorities said the surveillance was likely intended to prepare for further intelligence activity against the individual concerned.
German media outlet Der Spiegel reported that investigators suspect the operation could have escalated to physical attacks or even an assassination attempt.
The targeted businessman’s company had previously supplied small attack drones to Ukraine and had more recently focused on producing individual components.
Alla S. is due to appear in court on Wednesday, while Sergey N. will face proceedings after extradition from Spain.
German authorities have repeatedly warned that Russia is recruiting so-called “disposable agents”, often via social media, to carry out espionage and sabotage tasks for small payments, without formal training.
