Ghanaian police and security authorities arrested nearly 50 Nigerians in a sting operation against online scammers on Wednesday.
According to AFP, information minister Sam George stated that a night time raid on the outskirts of the capital resulted in the arrest of 48 suspected cybercrime operatives, believed to be Nigerian nationals.
Those arrested in Ghana, 46 men and two women, are accused of conducting “romance scams, online investment fraud, impersonation schemes and illicit online gold trading,” George said in a post on X(formerly Twitter).
Ghana has this year tightened regulations on its gold trade, including limiting purchases by foreigners, as part of efforts to curb informal mining that has caused widespread environmental damage.

Online fraud has also grown in the country, particularly among young people facing limited economic opportunities.
Nigeria is widely associated with internet fraudsters known as “Yahoo Boys,” though it has also become a destination for foreign scam operations.
Last year, a major raid in Lagos led to the arrest of 792 suspects, including 148 Chinese nationals.
Earlier this year, AFP documented Accra’s tech-savvy teens turning to phishing scams and setting up fake online stores to rack up thousands of cedis in just a few hours.
In the raid, police recovered 54 laptops, 39 mobile phones and a Starlink internet kit.
