South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the younger sister of the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, to complete his term in the United States Senate.
The appointment came hours after President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Nordone for the role, describing the move as a fitting tribute to the longtime senator, who died unexpectedly over the weekend at the age of 71.
Announcing the decision on Monday, McMaster said appointing Nordone would ensure her brother’s work continues until the end of his term in January.

In her remarks, Nordone paid tribute to Graham, describing him as an exceptional leader and a devoted brother who had always stood by her.
Following the deaths of their parents while they were still young, Graham legally adopted his teenage sister and took responsibility for raising her, supporting her through school and into adulthood.
Nordone’s appointment is temporary. South Carolina Republicans are scheduled to hold a special primary on August 11 to select their candidate for the November election, with the winner set to begin a full six-year Senate term in January.
