Local officials stated that the gang launched the deadly assault to avenge the recent death of a bandit leader, whom miners had killed after receiving extortion demands.

Criminal gangs frequently terrorise communities across northwestern and central Nigeria through village raids, mass kidnappings, and arson.
Bandits regularly target informal gold miners to seize control of lucrative extraction sites and extort precious metals, leaving local communities and military forces exposed to escalating violence.
