Seven people have been killed following an attack on a mining site in the Kuru community of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, also left several others injured. The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Caleb Mutfwang on Artisanal Mining, Emmanuel Solomon, confirmed the development on Thursday, saying he had been briefed on the attack and was heading to the community to assess the situation firsthand.

Solomon described the killings as unfortunate and part of a disturbing pattern of violence against miners in the local government area.

He recalled that only days earlier, miners travelling to a site in the Gyel community were ambushed, leaving two people dead while one managed to escape. He also noted that a similar attack two weeks ago resulted in two fatalities and one injury.

“Just before yesterday, in another community in Gyel, they attacked three people, but one of them escaped. Unfortunately, two died. The victims were on their way to a mining site when they were ambushed and killed,” he explained.

According to Solomon, the injured survivor from the earlier attack is currently receiving treatment at Lome Hospital, while one of those killed was his younger brother.

He stressed that the recurring attacks require urgent intervention and assured that the state government would take steps to address the security situation to provide better protection for miners.

The latest attack adds to rising concerns over the safety of mining communities in Plateau State and has renewed calls for stronger security measures in Jos South and surrounding areas.
