Manchester City edged ahead of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burnley on Wednesday.

The win, secured by an early goal from Erling Haaland, condemned Burnley to relegation, marking their third Premier League demotion in five seasons.

With just four games left for both title contenders, City now leads on goal difference, setting the stage for a thrilling finish to the season.

Pep Guardiola’s men, fresh from a 2-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday, wasted no time asserting their dominance with Haaland capitalising on a clever pass from Jeremy Doku to chip the ball over Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dubravka just five minutes into the match.

City continued to pepper the Burnley goal with shots, but despite several chances, they failed to extend their lead.

Guardiola was visibly frustrated with his team’s inability to score more. “The chances were there. We created a lot. We made a fantastic game,” he remarked. “We did everything after a demanding game three days ago.” The manager’s frustration was evident as City failed to put the game to bed with a more commanding scoreline.

Burnley, who had been hanging on by a thread, could have equalised before halftime, but Zian Flemming squandered a golden opportunity.

The Clarets’ hopes were dashed, and their relegation was confirmed, as they sit 13 points adrift of safety with only four games remaining.

Head coach Scott Parker acknowledged that the team had “fallen a bit short” and failed to achieve the necessary points.

“We’ve fallen a bit short. The facts are we had to overachieve this year and we’ve not mananged to do that,” said Parker.

Burnley’s early-season promise, including three wins from their opening nine games, quickly faded, with just one victory in their last 25 matches sealing their fate.
