Two Dead in Greek Firefighting Chopper Crash

A midair collision between two firefighting helicopters killed two pilots on Sunday as emergency crews fought wild blazes west of Athens.

The Bell helicopters, leased from an Australian firm, collided while conducting water drops over the Psatha region, killing a Danish and a Greek pilot.

Officials grounded all remaining Bell helicopters in the area to investigate the crash, which brought the week’s fire-related death toll to five.

Extremely violent winds reaching 100 kilometres per hour continue to hamper aerial operations and accelerate the blazes, which have destroyed more than 16,000 acres.

Greek authorities warned of ongoing maximum fire risks around Athens, while police arrested three suspects for arson and negligence linked to the outbreaks.
