The death toll from a flash flood in northwestern China has risen to 25, with 23 others injured, state media reported on Sunday, a week after the disaster.
The flood struck the Shuangshimen Scenic Area, a popular tourist destination for day campers in mountainous southern Gansu province, on July 26. State media initially reported 10 deaths and 23 injuries.
The updated toll was announced as China’s National Commission for Disaster Prevention said it would oversee an investigation into the incident, Xinhua reported.
Shuangshimen is known for its natural stone arches, alpine meadows and mountain streams. Videos of the flooding showed torrents of water rushing through a valley where tents and vehicles had been parked.
China has experienced widespread flooding and other extreme weather this summer.
In July, storms in Hubei province killed at least 11 people, while six people died and about 130,000 were evacuated in southern Guangxi after torrential rains caused several dams to breach.
A landslide in Dangchang County in southern Gansu province also killed 21 people in July.
