Lionel Messi has said he already misses wearing Argentina’s jersey, a day after bringing his international career to a close.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner scored a penalty in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Benin in Buenos Aires, a match he described as the “saddest day of my career.”
“Yesterday was my last match, and I’m already missing the light blue and white jersey,” Messi wrote on social media.
He added that he was confident in his decision.
“I know I’m taking the right decision,” he said.

Messi leaves the international stage as Argentina’s all-time leading scorer with 126 goals, more than double the next highest total.
He also holds the record for most caps, with 208 appearances, and the most assists, with 70.
“It was an incredible journey, full of joy but also some sorrow,” he said, thanking his family and teammates and paying tribute to the late Diego Maradona.
