Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu has met INTERPOL Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza in Lyon, France, to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against transnational crime.

Disu held the meeting on Monday during his maiden official visit to the INTERPOL General Secretariat in Lyon.

According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, both sides discussed ways to deepen international police cooperation. The discussions covered cybercrime, counter-terrorism, financial crime and organised crime. They also focused on tracking fugitives and sharing intelligence.

In addition, Disu and INTERPOL officials discussed how to use global police databases and other policing tools effectively. The police said the meeting would help strengthen criminal intelligence analysis and cross-border investigations. It would also support efforts to disrupt criminal networks operating across national borders.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to strengthening cooperation with INTERPOL and international law-enforcement partners,” the statement said.

The Force said it would continue to use intelligence, technology and global policing capabilities to respond to evolving security threats. Disu was accompanied by the Head of INTERPOL Nigeria and the National Central Bureau, Abuja, AIG Olaolu Adegbite.

Other members of the delegation included the Director of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre, AIG Ezima Akaninyene Ifem. The Head of the Nigeria Police Counter Terrorism Unit, AIG Akoh Benedict Gabriel, also joined the delegation.

INTERPOL Africa Committee Member, CP Ojajuni Olubode, was also part of the visit. The meeting comes as INTERPOL continues to support international operations against organised and cyber-enabled crime.

In August, INTERPOL said an eight-month operation targeting organised crime groups in West Africa led to 58 arrests and the identification of 263 suspects across 23 countries. The global police organisation has also worked with Nigerian law enforcement agencies on operations targeting financial crime, cybercrime, drug trafficking and human trafficking.
