The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has approved the Aloba family’s petition for a new investigation into Mohbad’s death.

The family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, disclosed this in a statement on September 29.

Recall, Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, died on September 12, 2023. According to Punch, the family submitted its petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026. The Force Headquarters in Abuja received the petition on May 7.

According to the lawyers, the petition raised concerns about inconsistencies in the earlier investigation. It also called for a detailed forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.

Following the approval, the IGP forwarded the petition to the Lagos State Police Command. The family was later informed that officers from the Special Enquiry Bureau had taken over the case.

“The family’s representative has since been invited and has engaged with the new team of investigators assigned to the matter. The family has continued to follow up with the investigators and remained engaged with the new investigative process,” Ogungbe said.

The clarification came after the National High Court in Abuja dismissed a separate suit on September 25. The suit, numbered FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026, sought a new investigation into Mohbad’s death. However, Ogungbe said the case was separate from the family’s petition to the police. He stressed that the Aloba family did not file the suit or authorise its filing.

“The Aloba Family therefore does not wish the public to conflate the dismissal of that suit with the separate investigative process already commenced pursuant to the Family’s petition to the Inspector-General of Police,” the statement noted.

The family maintained that the court’s decision did not stop the police investigation. It also pledged to provide investigators with documents, witnesses and other relevant materials.

Meanwhile, the family urged the police to conduct the investigation with diligence, independence and professionalism. The lawyers said the family was not trying to prejudge the outcome or engage in “trial by media.” Instead, they said the family wants a credible, comprehensive and transparent process.

The goal is to establish the facts surrounding Mohbad’s death.

“The re-investigation is ongoing. The Aloba Family remains fully engaged. The pursuit of justice for Mohbad continues,” the statement concluded.
