India’s foreign ministry has issued an urgent advisory for Indian nationals in Iran to depart the country amid an escalating security environment and concerns about potential military developments.

The Indian Embassy in Tehran stated on social media that “in view of the evolving situation in Iran, Indian nationals who are currently in Iran are advised to leave Iran by available means of transport, including commercial flights.”

Authorities estimate that there are typically around 10,000 Indian citizens in Iran, including students, pilgrims, businesspeople and tourists. The advisory underscored that all Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) should exercise due caution, avoid areas of protests or demonstrations, stay in contact with the Indian Embassy in Iran and monitor local media for any developments.

The warning comes amid heightened regional tensions, including fears of a possible United States strike on Tehran and ongoing unrest within Iran. Several nations have issued similar warnings, urging their citizens to exercise heightened vigilance or to leave the country.

India’s advisory precedes Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned visit to Israel later this week. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the visit as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation against what he characterised as “radical” adversaries, and Modi said he was “looking forward” to discussions during the trip.

India and Israel have expanded collaboration in defence, agriculture, technology and security in recent years, although New Delhi also maintains strong diplomatic and economic ties with Gulf countries and Tehran, including cooperation on developing Iran’s Chabahar Port, a key trade route to Afghanistan.

The embassy warning reflects broader concerns about the safety of Indian citizens, advising them to keep travel and identity documents accessible and to remain in regular contact with consular officials for assistance as the situation continues to evolve.
