Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon killed two people on Wednesday, Lebanese authorities said.

Lebanon’s health ministry stated that an “Israeli enemy strike on a vehicle in the town of Zahrani in the Sidon district killed one person,” referring to an area well north of the Israeli border.

An AFP correspondent at the scene reported a charred car and debris scattered along the main road, with emergency workers attending the site.

Later, the ministry confirmed a second strike in Bazuriyeh, in the Tyre district, also targeting a vehicle, which killed another person.

Israel said both strikes were carried out “in response to Hezbollah’s repeated violations of the ceasefire understandings” and targeted operatives from the group.

The strikes come despite a truce reached in November 2024 aimed at ending over a year of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

Earlier this month, Lebanon’s army said it had completed the first phase of its plan to disarm Hezbollah in areas south of the Litani River, about 30 kilometres from the Israeli border. The strike in Zahrani, however, occurred north of the Litani.

Israel has accused Hezbollah of rearming and criticised the army’s efforts as insufficient, while Hezbollah continues to reject calls to relinquish its weapons.

Since the truce, more than 350 people have reportedly died in Israeli strikes in Lebanon, according to AFP’s tally of health ministry reports.
