Israeli forces have reportedly advanced several hundred metres into Lebanese territory, marking the latest breach of a fragile ceasefire agreement, according to a report by Israeli Army Radio on Monday.
The incursion took place near the village of Meiss El Jabal, based on information from Lebanese sources. The Israeli military has yet to issue an official statement on the movement.
A tenuous ceasefire has been in effect since November, following several months of intense cross-border hostilities between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah. The conflict had reached full-scale levels by September last year.
Lebanese authorities have consistently documented thousands of violations by Israel since the ceasefire took hold, including incidents that resulted in civilian casualties and injuries due to Israeli fire.
As part of the truce, Israel was meant to complete a full military withdrawal from southern Lebanon by January 26.
However, this deadline was pushed back to February 18 due to Israel’s refusal to comply. Despite the extension, Israeli forces continue to occupy five military outposts along the border.
In addition to the ground presence, Israeli airstrikes on targets inside Lebanon have continued on an almost daily basis, further straining the already fragile peace.
