The United States Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, October 12, 2026, in observance of the U.S. Columbus Day holiday, the U.S. Mission Nigeria said.

The announcement was made in a short post on X on Sunday.

Columbus Day is a federal holiday in the United States, observed annually on the second Monday of October.

The embassy and consulate regularly observe both American and Nigerian public holidays, during which routine consular services, including visa processing, are unavailable.

The U.S. Embassy had previously announced that routine visa services would be processed through the Consulate General in Lagos.

The Abuja embassy handles diplomatic and official visas.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja will continue to process diplomatic and official visas (A, G and C visas). Applicants who believe they may qualify for a diplomatic or official visa should first consult with their protocol office that normally handles visa matters,” the embassy wrote.
