Liberia announced on Tuesday that it will accept up to 1,200 foreign nationals deported from the United States over the next year, supporting President Donald Trump’s expanding immigration enforcement measures.
Under this programme, the US government sends deportees to third-party nations rather than their home countries.
The Liberian government confirmed that a first group of 20 deportees will arrive on Thursday.
Officials emphasised that arriving individuals remain free to leave the West African nation at their discretion or apply for local asylum.

Liberia joins African nations like Ghana and Equatorial Guinea in serving as transit hubs for US deportations.

While former US diplomats claim Washington uses visa restrictions to pressure African nations into accepting third-country migrants, Liberia insists it receives no financial rewards and participates solely for humanitarian reasons, though it will accept technical assistance to strengthen its national migration system.
