A government-owned ferry carrying nearly double its allowed capacity capsized on Lake Kariba last week, killing 94 people in Zimbabwe’s deadliest transport disaster on record.

Officials confirmed on Tuesday that about 180 passengers packed the vessel—far exceeding its official limit of 90—before strong waves struck and overturned the boat as it travelled from Kariba to a remote rural community.

Rescuers have saved 77 survivors so far, while emergency teams continue search and recovery operations on the massive reservoir bordering Zambia.

The soaring death toll surpasses that of a 1991 bus crash that claimed 89 lives, making this the worst transit catastrophe in the nation’s history.
