A Libyan court has sentenced Osama Almasri Najim, the former head of Mitiga prison, to seven years and four months in jail after finding him guilty of torturing and mistreating detainees.
Almasri Najim was convicted of committing acts of torture and cruel and degrading treatment against inmates, according to a statement issued by the national prosecutors’ office late Sunday.

Najim previously served as director of Tripoli’s judicial police and was in charge of Mitiga prison, located near the capital’s airport, a facility that has faced allegations of serious abuses against detainees.
He is also wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over accusations of war crimes and crimes against humanity. He has remained in Libyan custody since his detention last November.
Najim was at the centre of a diplomatic controversy in Italy last year after being arrested there but later released and returned to Libya on a plane arranged by the Italian government.
