French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned Russia’s overnight aerial attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and several other regions.

Russian officials said on Thursday that at least one person was killed and dozens were wounded in the overnight strike.

According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko, the airstrikes targeted civilian infrastructure and residential buildings.

Thursday’s overnight strike also hit railway infrastructure and ports in the southern Odesa region.

Macron, in a post shared on X on Thursday, criticised Russia over the attack.

“By launching a new massive strike of drones and missiles against Ukrainian cities and civilians—the largest in the past four years—Russia is further compounding the outrage of its aggression,” said Macron.

“It lays bare all the hypocrisy with which it negotiated the fragile truce of the past few days. By bombing civilians, Russia demonstrates less its strength than its weakness: it is running out of solutions on the military front and does not know how to end its war of aggression.”

Macron reaffirmed France’s solidarity with Ukraine.

“France stands alongside Ukraine and the Ukrainian people and will continue to mobilise to secure a cessation of hostilities and bring about a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, one that guarantees its security and that of Europe,” he added.

The Russia-Ukraine war has entered its fifth year despite US-backed peace efforts that have made little progress and delivered few results.

According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the attack during U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to China showed Russia wants to continue fighting despite a peace push by Washington.
