Madagascar’s lower house of parliament on Tuesday voted to impeach President Andry Rajoelina, accusing him of dereliction of duty. However, the presidency dismissed the parliamentary session as “lacking any legal foundation.”

The impeachment motion secured 130 votes in favour—well above the two-thirds majority required in the 163-member chamber. The decision marks a major political blow to President Rajoelina, who has reportedly gone into hiding after weeks of public protests over his administration’s handling of national affairs.
